Going to watch this poll and see if we self-administered types are a dying breed...

We do use PSM on our bigger/busier boxes, only as a "back-up" in case our staff gets tied up taking care of multiple emergencies @ the same time. (It happens!) However we are primary on our own servers and only occasionally turn to PSM for work. It's just nice to know they've got an eye on things; for instance they can put in for a reboot on a server-down if our hands are full of other issues at that moment.

Not a chance, but I do think the required base knowledge to run one's own systems has actually increased over time, thus it's more likely that you'll find variations of these types who specialize in a number of main areas on top of other generalizations.

I'm not sure why "Your Own Staffs" is even listed to compare with 3rd party services.

Nobody can dispute having your own inhouse 24x7 dedicated staff is the best way to go, even we'll admit that, but you can't compare a nominal monthly fee to what it would cost to have your very own staff.

For those with enough servers that can afford an inhouse 24x7 staff would be unlikely to even consider a 3rd party server management company.... and someone with a few servers could never even think about paying an inhouse 24x7 staff.

You could have a few servers and still pay an inhouse staff if you had enough of a budget to do so..this really depends on your financial backing.

Even if someone has a dozen servers, there is absolutely no way they can afford a dedicated 24x7 staff of qualified system admins without losing money. Obviously if the staff will be doing other non server admin work, then that's a different story, but that's not what we're talking about here.

You don't need to have round the clock admins, if you have yourself working as well as someone else and both of you have monitoring setup via pagers or atleast work 12 hour shifts each then you are fine..I have seen companies do this successfully before.

I use PSM and self-administration. They are great, and know what they're doing, while I'm still learning as I go.

"On call," it works for ambulances, it works for servers. LOL!!! Welcome to my world! If I'm not wearing a pager for one, I'm wearing a pager for the other...

PSM works great as a backup / overnight network administration for me.

I really think the poll numbers speak for themselves

As mentioned, that isn't a complete list, athlough t looks like it provides a good selection.

There's a pretty wide range of server managers that I've seen. There's some relatively expensive server management companies, althouth I haven't used them; that outlay doesn't make sense for me - or probably most people here. The expensive SM is probably gearing their service to companies that need a server or more just to run their websites. In such case, that outlay for an expensive SM makes sense compared to an in-house staff.

Some SM offer different services, or have a particular area where they shine. A company like PSM is great for daily management, but their policies really cover daily management. Currently, I need some 3rd-part Apache modules installed, and PSM are not the people to have do this job - and with the prices they charge, it's not economical for them to figure out the modules. I'm going to have to hire a SM that specialized in more in-depth work, where they will take the time to learn the modules and how to configure them. With this, I'll be paying a SM per hour what I pay PlatinumServerManagement per month. I'll probably contact Bob at Linux-Tech.net or Mark at TqHosting.com/servers for this type of job.

Here's a list that I picked up a while ago (anywhere from 1-2 years ago) from a post here on WHT. I may have added a few of my own I found, and it is possible that not all companies are still operating, or that they may have changed their services since the post. Also, I didn't check into every company:

I dont think it should matter, wemanageservers.com and wemanageservers.net are parked at the same website...

It would have been a difference, if both were different companies.

dynamicnet; I'll make a note of that. As I mentioned, I picked up this list some time ago from another post here at WHM. I can't edit the post, but I'll check and make sure that the right info is there for you, in the event I pass the list on again. Also, it's nice to see a company offering support for H-Sphere; I used that CP a few years ago, and I was very impressed. It was enourmously power and flexible when I used it, and I'm sure PSoft has made improvements since. I'm surprised more people don't consider it as a hosting platform.

steven-v: what threat has been made? I don't see anything that strikes me as a threat.

    keepr: What's OP?

    Thanks,

In this context, "OP" is an acronym for "Original Poster."

No no no. I did not mean like that. Just was curious... That's it.. We do not operate any server management service like that. You can search and will see it.
